Excuse me, Sir - Does your armourer have any off-cuts? It’s just that I’ll be needing a new bed soon.
DOG BEDS for DIGGERS & CHEWERS.
Your cute pup came with bone crushing wolf-issue gnashers as standard, and if they choose to use those, or their claws, on their bed- it’s a bit of a problem.
Chain mail isn’t really an option, so here are a few other suggestions —
Marginal gains - a three pronged approach.
- Structure. Pick a style with as few grabbable corners and edges as possible - avoid piped or raised seams, gathers, pointed corners - you get the idea. For instance our Original Style nests are less tempting than the Pillow Edged nests, which have a raised top-stitched top border. (Our zips try to fool inquisitive noses, they’re all double stitched or hidden in the upholstery )
- Filling. Better to opt for foam, rather than fibre, or - perish the thought - feather. It’s not so much that foam is super strong and chew proof, more that it’s less fun to demolish. Once there’s a hole, fibre and feathers can be pulled through the hole and flung round the room - so entertaining! Foam is a self contained block, its destruction requires far more patience. More about fillings.
- Fabrics. Most of the fabrics we offer are contract upholstery fabrics. That means they have passed the Martindale abrasion test at more than 30,000 cycles, so they’re tough enough for continuous human use in public places, and will withstand dog claws pretty well ( cats claws - that’s another matter!) Dog teeth, also another matter. We offer Oxford weave nylon, and 100% cotton canvas ( think old fashioned tent ) which are very robust, with good tear strength. They’re not exactly comforting and cuddly, but if you chew your bed —-. More about fabrics.
Probably no cosy upholstered bed is foolproof against a determined chewer - if the worst comes to the worst we provide a comprehensive repair service. More about repairs.
